West Michigan

A fairly blind rental, largely based on the title (I’m from Michigan) and a promise of a short run time. I was fairly impressed by this personal, sensitive story. And it has some pretty landscapes of Lake Michigan and, well, of western Michigan.

The film is about a brother and sister who take a road trip to see their sick grandfather but things don’t go as planned. They wind up stranded and camping, having conversations. The sister, in particular, is going through a teenage existential crisis and has to come to grips with life.

The film is somewhat awkwardly filmed at times but is otherwise competent and, as noted, has a great eye for natural beauty and small towns. The acting is solid with the lead actress putting in a smart, sensitive, emotional performance.

This movie won’t change the word but it’s thoughtful enough that it might help people in emotional crisis. Certainly it means well and, except for a thudding bit of obvious symbolism at the very end, it does it with a light, subtle touch.
