The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf is an anime-style story set in the Witcher book, tv series, and video game universe. If you aren’t familiar with The Witcher, I’m not sure this is a great entry point.
The animation It tells the backstory of Vesemir, the old mentor to the Witcher Geralt who we follow in the other media. This is a fine adventure story that focuses on the character as a child before and during the trials to become a Witcher but mostly on him in his prime as he and his compatriots deal with a threat to their order.
The art and animation is fine, the story is ok, the voice acting is fine. It does tell a theoretically important story in the Witcher history. But really there’s not a lot to say about this negative or positive. It’s decent time to get some key backstory but I don’t think any of it is particularly critical to enjoying the main storylines.
If I seem largely indifferent to this flick, it’s because I am. It’s fine. It’s a perfectly watchable, perfectly average film. I don’t think it will appeal to people outside the existing fanbase. I shall not be doing summersaults… I shall not be burning it at the stake.
