Habit (2021)

This film is advertised with a reference to early Tarantino. Don’t you believe it. It’s more similar to 70s era bad girl exploitation… maybe a little Russ Meyers. But it’s not as hyper literate or as violent as Tarantino. So shame on the ad copy, I guess.

Habit stars Bella Thorne as a deeply religious LA party girl who has the drugs she’s entrusted to stolen and loses her apartment in one bad day. So she and her two best gal pals don nun habits and go out on the street to beg for donations for their new fictional convent. Because her best pal Jesus told her to.

This movie is very proud of its sacrilegious attitude. Yes, movie, we get it – you’re trying to freak out the squares. Congrats for your bad girl edge. I’ll just be over here clutching my pearls, thank you very much.

This is a pretty decent crime thriller/comedy mix. As long as you aren’t turned off by giving religion a purple nurple. It’s not a bad time watching some hot chicks do some ethical degradation while in panties and garters, sometimes in nun habits, and more often in both.

Bella Thorne is pretty good and its interesting she took the part. Yes it allows her do and say some outrageous things and I’m sure that was fun. But the character seems earnest in her own peculiar, twisted way about Jesus and the movie really sticks to that theme.

The movie is in and out so fast… it’s about an hour and fifteen minutes in total. It doesn’t have a lot to say so it doesn’t waste our time saying it. Yes its a little too proud of its sacrilege and yes that might be a turn-off itself. But it’s a decent crime thriller/comedy.
