Against the Ice

Against the Ice is a semi-successful, kind of long, kind of dull Netflix film based on true events. Denmark sends a ship to Greenland to find a previously failed expedition. The captain and an unqualified engineer embark with sled dogs when the ship gets iced in. They have set backs and wind up abandoned, snowed in, and desperate.

Not a bad movie, really. Certainly the location shooting is stark and beautiful. Not sure if it was filmed in Greenland but if you told me it was, I’d believe you. And it looked 100% like a miserable production so credit to the frozen actors and frozen film crew for putting up with it.

But the film does struggle a bit to fill the time with their trials and tribulations. In the end, it spends a bit too long on cabin fever delusions and I started to get pretty restless.

Kind of an alright movie, especially if you like survival stories (or maybe if you are from Denmark and dig the national pride). I think it’s well acted and certainly it showcased the struggle for survival and sanity.
