As They Made Us

As They Made Us is listed as a comedy… which is pretty funny because I wouldn’t go into this flick expecting a laugh. It’s a drama… maybe some low-key amusing moments, but it’s drama… maybe even a bit of a tearjerker. Jeepers.

The flick star Dianna Agron as the daughter of aging parents played by Dustin Hoffman and Candice Bergan. Hoffman’s character is terminally ill and doesn’t have much time left. Agron has to deal with her mom who is in denial, her ex-husband, her new potential boyfriend, and her distant brother who hasn’t seen his parents in a decade.

The flick is how these people butt heads and try to relate and make amends. It’s a pretty good drama with a good – if sometimes intentionally annoying – characters that I low-key started to care for. It’s not the best of this type of familial drama, but it’s a pretty good one.

It’s a well acted film. It was nice to see Hoffman and Bergan… and Hoffman does a good job playing aged and out-of-it and then somewhat more spry in flashbacks. I guess I haven’t seen Dianna Agron since Glee so I didn’t recognize her at first (with dark hair, out of a cheerleader outfit, and ten years older). She was quite good.

Overall, I enjoyed the flick and found it thoughtful, heartfelt, and believable. Just don’t expect a comedy.
