Michael Cane and Aubrey Plaza are two actors I like but never thought about starring in the same film. And when I saw them pop up in this, I thought it was a perfect match. It just made sense. Though I was thinking of Plaza playing her usual emo character and not the fairly normal person she plays here. Alas, we miss the opportunity of April Ludgate hanging out with curmudgeonly old Michael Cane… but that’s ok. This is still a pretty amusing little movie.

The film stars Cane as a famous writer who hasn’t written anything in forty years and Plaza as the newly installed owner of her father’s publishing house. The books aren’t selling so Plaza digs up an old contract with Cane and convinces him to publish and promote a new novel. The old and the young butt heads at first and slowly learn to respect one another.

I enjoyed this movie even though it has a kind of hazy focus and may lack in any real understanding of marketing and promotion. That’s kind of excusable as long as it delivers like it does. A pretty acidic sweet little comedy/drama about two dissimilar people at different stages in their lives. Cane is wonderful playing this grumpy, annoyed man who can’t stand Plaza at first. She’s good playing against type and it’s easy to see how the two start to work together.

This isn’t an amazing film and I think its ultimate predictability works against it a little bit. But it’s still a gentle, amusing film to watch. It’s worth checking out.
