Hex (2022)

I had a fair amount of confidence this would be a pretty bad movie… but the premise had me curious enough to pull the trigger. Could they make a movie about skydiving into a supernatural horror movie? What would that even look like? The cover art is cool (and a lie).

The flick is, indeed, about a bunch of skydivers who jump out of perfectly good planes. In this case, they perform a challenging formation called The Hex… which just so happens to be cursed. Once they get back to the safety of the planet, they are haunted by haunts and spooked by spooks.

Yeah, this isn’t a very good movie. It feels like a bunch of extreme sports fans got together with GoPros and decided to make a scary movie instead of yet another extreme sports documentary. The result is very good skydiving sequences (as far as I can tell) mixed with some questionable acting, pretty bad visual FX, and a lot of generic hokum scares built around a lot of clichés.

Once you get past the skydiving, what’s going on here has been in seen in plenty of other scary movies. Think a more vertical Jacob’s Ladder or Final Destination with dummies who jump out of perfectly good airplanes. There’s nothing unique or interesting in the actual scary part of this scary movie… and the scares themselves are often overwrought and unconvincing.

But, hey, at least they have a lot of quality skydiving sequences and The Hex maneuver looked impressive. But what do I know about it? I’ve never thrown myself out of a perfectly good airplane before. Maybe this is all bargain basement stuff and actual skydivers would hate-watch it and throw peanut brittle at the screen.

But, still, a few points for the inventive idea and showing me something different. Too bad the actual spookshow bits were so generic and familiar.
