I’m Totally Fine

I’m Totally Fine is a film that starts out very very wobbly but grows with emotional strength into a lovely little movie. It really snuck up on me.

The film stars Jillian Bell as woman who recently lost her best friend and business partner (played by Natalie Morales). While spending time alone, a space alien replicates Morales so she can examine humanity up close. Bell is convinced she’s lost her mind.

I really dig Natalie Morales as an actor but what she was doing in this film initially turned me off. The premise of the film is basically a reworking of John Carpenter’s Starman. Morales as the alien tries to emulate Jeff Bridges’ discombobulation and speech patterns. And it doesn’t work… I mean, I’m not exactly sure what “alien takes on a human body and speaks like she’s never experience human language before” really sounds like, but it didn’t sound right coming from her. But possibly I just had to get used to it, possibly I had to stop comparing her to Jeff Bridges.

But once I settled into her groove and the movie stopped being a Jillian Bell freak-out, the film settled into a lovely little movie about loss, friendship, and saying goodbye. It was touching and sweet and adorable and the best use of Papa Roach possible in 2023. It was the second act party and third act farewell that really touched me and convinced me the movie was better than I thought it was in the first act.

I’m happy I stuck with this adorable little human sci-fi comedy. I like the two lady leads and they ultimately pull off what they are putting down. I recommend it.
