Mack and Rita

Mack and Rita is an old fashioned body swap movie that just wants to be loved. Really, really, desperately wants to be loved. Yeah, it tries too hard to be wacky and relatable and winds up feeling anything but.

The flick is about a young woman who has always felt like an old soul. One day she wakes up in the body of an old lady… played by Diane Keaton… which, hey, if you gotta go old, it doesn’t hurt to look like Diane Keaton.

To be fair, Diane Keaton is clearly having fun playing a young person in an “old” body. She throws herself into wacky physical comedy, has fun with social media nonsense, tip-toes up to romance with a younger man, and so on. Too bad it’s never really funny enough. It tries way too hard to get laughs that just ain’t coming.

I suspect my mom might like this movie. I, however, really didn’t. I wanted to though… Diane Keaton is a national treasure and deserves better scripts.
