Misfits, The

The Misfits surprised me only once… when the credits rolled, Renny Harlin’s name came up. Yet it didn’t surprise me either… I can believe the flashy attempts at cool would come from a director like him. But also that the Renny Harlin who once made pretty good 90s action flicks but who has disappointed since would continue to disappoint. I’m certainly disappointed. Again.

Misfits is about an international crew of do-gooders who rob from the rich and give to the poor. For their upcoming heist, they need a man who can break out of any prison… so they recruit Piers Brosnan’s character who would rather rob from the rich and give to himself.

This movie is the epitome of low-effort try-hard films. It thinks its a slickly produced stylish sexy action comedy heist film but puts so little actual effort in being any of that. Watching this film is like being disappointed every second you see them attempting something they fail to achieve. There’s so little pep in the style and so little humor in the attempts at comedy.

The sick, sad thing is that every once in a while… and I mean rarely… does the movie deliver on its promises. Sometimes you can see the slick, sexy film they think they are making. It’s a glimpse… but a faded, desperate one.

I wasn’t aggressively bored yet something this aggressively bland shouldn’t be awarded. It’s really not worth the time and effort of going to see it or even renting it. I’ve seen much worse, to be fair, so I can’t score it too low… but that’s just because a lower score would suggest even greater mediocrity. Something that rises to this level of blandness is just a bad film, not a roaring disaster.
