Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness

Spoiler alert: the darkness is not infinite.

This alleged tv series is four half hour episodes… so basically a 2 hour movie based on the Resident Evil video games. Why they diced it into half hour chunks is a bigger mystery than whatever zombie crimes they are investigating in this thing.

Infinite Darkness features Leon Kennedy and Clare Redfield, straight out of the games. They are (separately) investigating the latest bio-weapons crisis. They have already done this before so we get plenty of references to Racoon City and saving the president’s daughter. And Clare gets to have a cool red leather jacket….

This is pretty mediocre. It’s not terrible and its mostly watchable if you are a fan of the games (newcomers need not apply). But I came away with it wondering what was the point of all this. Leon has a variety of adventures, Clare is present, and then they fight a baddie in a copyrighted huge underground lab. Suggest a season 2, cut to black.

It doesn’t help that I spent the entire final act thinking the bad guy was onto something there and Leon was wasting his time trying to stop him. Maybe I missed a detail but what the villain wanted to do seemed pretty smart to me. Kind of hard to be invested when you think the hero is making a big dumb mistake.

Well hell, maybe the villain was trying to kill everyone but I thought he was trying to reveal the conspiracy to the world. I could be wrong. But I don’t think I’m wrong about how lukewarm and only partially cooked this thing is. I certainly think it looks great visually… best video game cut-scene CGI ever. But that ain’t enough.
