Run Sweetheart Run

While the message of this Amazon Prime movie is as subtle as a sledgehammer, I still appreciated the vibe, the badassery, the soundtrack, and the cinematography. This was a cool ass cool movie that’ll probably trigger some people who professionally get triggered for clicks and views.

Run Sweetheart Run is about a woman who, as a favor to her boss, meets up with one of his clients for dinner. He’s a handsome devil and their evening gravitates closer to a date than work. But it turns out he’s got bloodier ideas and he’s promised her life if she can survive the night. Run!

What I enjoyed about this film is that it starts out on one level and goes to a whole other one. It looks like it’s going to be a slasher movie set in a city with its Most Dangerous Game premise. And, for awhile, it’s that with a hint of something more. It takes about half the film for it to show its cards and I liked the reveal. It made sense given what we’d seen.

The film has a great soundtrack and a very cool, glossy look. It’s filmed at night and it generates a very brooding atmosphere that wobbles between dark and gritty and neon and bright. But always with an eerie, hunted feeling.

Ella Balinska plays the heroine as a confident, smart woman who goes from terrified to strong and confident over the course of the film. She’s great. Charismatic, cool, and fierce at different turns.

The baddie is Pilou Asbæk (giving me Pacey vibes here) and he’s cool, charismatic, and lethal. It’s a very good villain turn since we want to see him lose, to wipe that confident, entitled smile off his face. Just what this movie and its themes requires.

I liked its message/themes even though they could have been presented in a more subtle way. But, hell, the movie would probably laugh at the suggestion of subtly and say this is a moment for soldiers.

Yeah, this one worked for me. From casting to presentation to its overall vibe.
