Sorry To Bother You

Checked out the new indie social satire flick Sorry to Bother You. This is the first film from this writer/director and he tosses so much random comedy and wtf moments into a flick like he thinks it’ll be his last chance. Probably won’t be – it’s a pretty good flick with some amusing and crazy ideas.

Set in a very near future Southern California, it stars a down-on-his-luck young man who talks his way into a gig at a call center. He doesn’t do very well until an older agent (Danny Glover!) convinces him to use his “white voice” on the phone. Not his proper english voice, but his WHITE voice. He does (and is obviously dubbed) and begins to sell. When the call center tries to unionize, the management promote him to the A Team of sales where he meets the coked-up owner of the company played by Armie Hammer.

This is a funny movie with a thought in it’s head. It’s not a comedy (though it’s funny)… it’s a satire about the working poor being preyed on by big corporations. And other social matters. It’s not outright preachy though… it manages to do all this and carry this meaning while being mildly unhinged and satirical.

I’d say check it out, though with a warning that it’s not your typical movie. It isn’t perfect… sometimes its deep focus on not having a deep focus makes the film meander a bit. But I give most of that a pass as long as its trying something new with a level competence and satire. Good job.
