Tangled

Disney’s Tangled is one fantastic movie. It goes right up there with some of the great Disney flicks – like Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, etc. No hesitation on my part.

The movie is a hell of a lot of fun and super sweet. Not sweet in a sickly way either, just really sweet and romantic in an honest way. And it’s downright funny – often in a kind of weird mental sort of way.

For example, the horse. The horse is just made of awesome-sauce. If, for no other reason, than he tracks down the hero (who is a thief) like he was a dog sniffing for his scent. Or how the thief is always complaining that his Wanted posters never get his nose right so when the horse sees a poster, he puts one of his hoofs over the nose and realizes that THIS is the guy he’s looking for. Just kind of a really weird sense of humor. Of course, that’s mixed with people getting thwacked with frying pans too so it’s not like it’s always obscure and odd humor.

And, hey, the horse doesn’t talk and neither does Rapunzel’s pet chameleon… though I guess the sidekick characters didn’t talk in Pocahontas either. But they are just better in this flick.

Songs… they are good but probably not up to classic 90s Disney standards. Certainly better than Princess and the Frog… but there’s one sequence set in a tavern and sung by the ruffians and bandits there about Following Your Dream which had me in stitches the whole time. Just a wide fools grin because it was just so much damn fun. There’s also a beautiful song set to a beautiful lamp-lighting ceremony that’s just a testament to the animators (and Mandy Moore as a singer/performer).

I think I’m in fake-real love with Rapunzel. Or maybe her voice actress and maybe a little of the animators.
