V/H/S 85

I’m pretty lukewarm on the V/H/S found footage franchise… and I found this latest entry a real mess. Like the rest of the series, it’s presented as a beaten up VHS tape on which various short horror stories are told, usually in a low-fi, grungy, make-do manner. I love the theory behind the films, less so the results.

The frame narrative is interesting… and ends with a joke? 2.5 stars

No Wake is an interesting idea that just kind of stops when it seems like its getting to the point. I wondered if the story would pick up later… which it kinda sorta does? 2.5 stars

God of Death follows a news crew and rescue workers during an earthquake in Mexico. Pretty cool short… best of the lot. 3.5 stars.

TKNOGD is one of the worst things I’ve ever watched. It tries to represent early VR via performance art… but it’s not a story, the har-de-har-har jokes are lame (“Eye Phones”), and the depiction of VR tech in 85 is pure shit. 1/2 star.

Ambrosia starts with an interesting idea that ends too abruptly. It continues the story from No Wake… except not really. 2 stars.

Dreamkill – another interesting premise but told so sluggishly that it put me to sleep. 1.5 stars

What a mess. Only one genuinely good short… and one abysmal piece of crap. Then a bunch of middling to bad. Next!
