Van Helsing is a very loud, very obnoxious, very chaotic, very noisy movie. Characters yelled a lot, there was a bunch of mind-numbing action, cgi creatures, and then it was over and I was fine with that.
Pretty good FX for the time… almost getting CG characters real enough to be convincing… they certainly did a good job (for the time) with their digital actors doing stunts and/or showing them in CG sets.
Then there were things exploding and a lot of yelling. And things exploded.
The plot was a good attempt at merging the various movie monsters but I couldn’t help but thinking that they could have come up with something… better. Just more cohesive and logical and a better way of combining the creatures.
Dracula wasn’t a very good villain… the actor didn’t much impress me.
The comedy was run-of-the-mill… I got half-way through the movie and was missing Brendan Frasier since he at least made the Mummy movies goofy silly-grin funny. Or maybe they were just goofy silly fun without him. Either way, this movie wasn’t going for the same level of yucks but it still tried to be funny… and it was occasionally.
