Incredibles, The

The Incredibles is a great flick. It’s one of the best (if not THE best) superhero movie and it’s ALSO the best Bond movie in a long long time too. In fact, it’s so James Bond that it even has the jazzy saxophone-style type music for the bad guy and his secret lair that they used to use in the 60s.

This movie is genuinely good because it’s not at all written with kids in mind though they would LOVE the animation, art, and the kids in the flick. But, really, the pacing is geared toward an older crowd – there are long sequences where Mr. Incredible is sneaking into the bad guy’s lair… it’s quiet and cautious and paced with high tension. The movie is about 2 hours long which should tell you a lot about it having a full storyline. The dude who made Iron Giant made this and you can see that he gets these two genres and loves his superheroes.

And it has some kick butt action scenes that prove that what makes GOOD action are continuous shots of fast action and not a thousand small shots glued together to simulate action… (ahem, speaking of Michael Bay here again).

Voice acting is great. Holly Hunter is my bride with her role as supermom Elastigirl. The girl who played the daughter (Violet) nailed her part with some great line readings. The kid who played Dash (the boy) is also good at doing a kind of typical young brat without making him irritating or generic boy. Craig T. Nelson I barely recognized as Mr. Incredible – and he did a good job too. Samuel L. Jackson as superbuddy Frozone was just great. Elizabeth Pena and Wallace Shawn were also well used (Pena especially – I can’t believe it’s taken them this long to use her for voice overs).

The head villain was voiced by Jason Lee from all those Kevin Smith movies. He must have been having a total blast playing the big bad Bond-style supervillain given how he was Banky in Chasing Amy (the inker) and other characters.

The CG is great too. The art style is very stylized – they aren’t trying for perfect realism and the decision works since everything looks fantastic without looking a little eerie (the huamns mainly). The water effects and especially the characters’ hair are just fantastic.

Watch this flick.
