What We Left Behind

Checked out another (nerdy) documentary – What We Left Behind. A documentary about the middle child Star Trek series Deep Space Nine. Title based on the last episode of the series (What You Left Behind). Rented it on iTunes.

Odds of anyone not interested in Star Trek or Deep Space Nine in particular watching this doc: 0. Should you watch this doc anyway: No. This doc is intended exclusively for fans of the show and is, in fact, produced by its head writer and creatives so it’s mostly just a two hour praise session. But I liked Trek and DS9 (even when it was new *gasp*) so I enjoyed it for the most part. It was fun to see the cast twenty years older and hear some of their stories. Even if sometimes the self-back-patting started to get a little long in the tooth.

No mention of anything negative other than the writers thinking they should have done more LGBT content. Good chance to go into the office politics of why they couldn’t but they mostly gloss that over. They do talk about recasting the Dax character and clearly there’s a story there but they mostly gloss that over by saying the actors only know what they were told. And no mention of, ahem, Babylon 5. I’ll just leave that there for anyone who gets it.

So, yeah, mostly worth watching if you are a fan. You’ll learn a few bits and bobs and probably find it fun revisiting the cast and some of the episodes and themes discussed. Everyone else should just go on with their lives.
