Without Remorse

Without Remorse’s first problem is a title so generic it makes me miss The Hunt for Red October and The Sum of All Fears. But a title isn’t a movie. In this case though, a generic title for a kind of generic, pedestrian action film was more of a warning.

The film is about a US soldier (played with little charisma by the charismatic Michael B. Jordan) who performs an undercover operation in Syria which goes bad. Back home, his team are assassinated one a time by nefarious Russian agents. He survives the attack on him and vows revenge.

So this is basically just a revenge film. One that involves a lot of Clancy-like double dealing, CIA spooks, crosses, double crosses, and a lot of tactical gear. I gather this is based on one of his books and that maybe it’s not a faithful adaptation. I wouldn’t know… all I can say is that the plot isn’t setting the world on fire with its originality.

The action scenes are sometimes ok but there’s so little meat hanging on this hook that it was hard to really care after awhile. And that’s the biggest problem with the movie… none of it seems all that interesting or important and the action isn’t good enough on its own to excuse that.

I guess if you have Amazon Prime and a hankering for some Tom Clancy-ish action, it’s not the worst movie ever streamed. The acting isn’t bad, the action is ok, and the whole thing is mostly watchable. But that’s all damning with the faint praise this movie deserves. It’s aggressively slightly below average.
