Zola

Rashomon by way of Florida strippers? Close… just swap out the samurai for hookers on a madcap Florida road trip weekend from hell. I know this is based on a lengthy Twitter thread that I managed to complexly miss back in 2015 (and I’m feeling ok about that) so I guess I don’t have any ogling nostalgia about it.

The flick follows Zola, a waitress and stripper who encounters another stripper and they embark on an excursion to make money at a club in Florida. And, in some capacity, do a little prostituting on the side. The extent and facts of the story are debatable, apparently (apparently mostly true but maybe punched up a little for drama in the original thread). Plus we get the story from the other girl’s POV too.

And I was ok with the movie, wavering about how much I was into it or not at any given time. But when it switches narrators, it got interesting and funny since the alternate version of events were comically overwrought. But then the movie just gets confusing as I lost track of the story since it stops being from the second girl’s POV… but the new events don’t track from where the first version of the story ended. Hey, maybe that’s just because the whole allegedly true story is itself murky. Doesn’t mean I wasn’t baffled by the narrative decisions.

Not a bad film if you enjoyed flicks like Springbreakers and don’t mind some raunch overkill. And some wishy washy story telling. Or if you have an utter fascination with a stripper’s Twitter story.
