21 Bridges

Checked out the new NYC-based cops ‘n crooks flick 21 Bridges. It’s about shutting down Manhattan and has raised the question of how many actual bridges that is. I’m not an expert on NY geography so I’ll stay out of that one. It’s not relevant either way…

So 21 Bridges is about a couple of dumb crooks who try to steal some cocaine and wind up in a gun fight with the cops, killing eight of them and getting away. The detective brought in shuts down the island until morning rush when the bridges (and tunnels) will need to be reopened. They have that much time to find and capture (?!?!) the crooks… but since the detective (played by Chadwick Bosemen) is known to shoot to kill, the other cops on the force are hoping for a different outcome.

This is a surprisingly solid cops ‘n robbers movie. There’s some twists in it and some good acting that elevate it from a typical B movie. I’m not going to suggest it’s amazing, but it gets the job done, offering up thrills, excitement, and suspense as needed. The film comes and goes, but it’s welcome when it’s on screen.
