Devil Below, The

Woof. I gave this pretty much a blind rental. I read the description but didn’t catch a trailer or read reviews. It sounded intriguing, even if it has been done before in movies like The Descent. But I should have left well enough alone and avoided this one.

So some scientists want to investigate a Kentucky mining town that vanished from the maps in the 70s for whatever hand-waving reasons. Seems the miners got et by underground boogie monsters and pretty soon they’ve gone and uncorked the passages and let them out.

This movie is shot well but is otherwise amateurish in its directing, editing, and pacing. The actors are a mixed bag but ultimately are reciting the boring dialog for boring characters they are given. Largely the biggest problem with the flick is that it’s been done better in similar movies and, just on its own merits, it’s not a very good or scary flick.

A few points can be given to some pretty decent creature design… which are immediately deducted by the obvious cheap attempts to hide how bad they must look. Shots of the critters are mostly out of focus and obscured in some other jittery camera way. It’s evident they got their designs ok on paper but couldn’t pull them off on screen. Either that or its a misguided attempt at suspense or something.

No particular reason to see this one. Moving on.
