How It Ends

How it Ends maybe could have been called Chill Apocalypse. This is a laid back gentle comedy about the last day on Earth. Or, really, it’s more about self-discovery than an actual end of days affair. Yes there are people out there doing things they only would because it’s the end of the world… but that’s more stand-up on a street corner than anything you’d see in The Purge. This movie has no interest in the darker side of humanity.

The film is about a woman and her previously imaginary but, today, flesh and blood inner child (teenager). There’s an asteroid coming to wipe every one out at 2am so she takes a walk around LA to say goodbye, make amends, get some drugs, and have one last big bang.

I think this film is gently funny and has a great cast of one-off cameos including Olivia Wild, Fred Armisen, Helen Hunt, Nick Kroll, Whitney Cummings, Paul Scheer, Charlie Day, Rob Hubel, Colin Hanks, and Bradley Whitford among others. Lots of favors called in on this one, I imagine.

Is this an apocalypse story? No… is it self-indulgent and me-focused like a good LA story would be? Yes. And I can see how that would annoy some people. I think it’s certainly a direction they chose and they stick to it… and it worked for me. I guess maybe it gets a little much at times but nothing that doesn’t work itself in the end.

This is hardly a serious movie but I enjoyed its chill (and totally unbelievable) take on the last day on Earth.
