Plan B (2021)

Plan B is a pretty terrific film. I was genuinely surprised. Surprised at how raunchy it was, surprised at how funny it was, and surprised at how heartfelt it was. It puts on a bawdy face but is secretly one of the warmest, almost sappiest sweet little movies. I see you, move, hiding behind your R rating!

The film is about two teen girl best friends who have the standard-issue party while mom’s away. One of the girls has drunk, depressed, mediocre sex. The next morning, they realize they need to get a morning after pill… and thus we have a rowdy road trip of self discovery and wacky hijinks.

I really enjoyed the two young leads in this film. I’m not familiar with either one of them but hope to see them in more films in the future. They are assisted by a whip-smart script that had me laughing out loud way more than I usually do at comedies these days (me being a jerky sourpuss comedy Grinch, I think). And they are assisted by some of that raunch. But that’s cool since it’s well setup, earned, and funny.

I very much enjoyed their friendship. They even have the expected, standard-issue arguments that all movies like this have to have and yet I wasn’t annoyed by it. I think their journeys of self discovery that instigate the arguments were so well written and acted, the arguments were earned and central to the movie, not just there to add unearned late stage drama (and run-time).

And they each have a surprisingly sweet romantic subplot that really worked. Warm, funny, and honest. Which basically describes the movie in a nutshell. A film that you kind of want to hug.

I really don’t have anything negative to say about this flick. It was very sweet and very funny… though I wouldn’t watch it with my parents (!!). I look forward to this director and these actors in the future.
