Sissy

Sissy is a very entertaining accidental slasher released to Shudder. It follows Cecilia, a successful social media blogger who runs into a childhood BFF who she hasn’t seen in years. She’s invited to a party with a bunch of people she doesn’t know… and things inadvertently get bloody. Very, very bloody.

This is a horror comedy that leans pretty heavily on some very gnarly kills. I laughed right out of the gate at some satirical jabs at social media influencers and the humor carries throughout, even as the killings start. The continuous current of dark and twisted humor pervades the film even as the satire slows down. You can tell they are just having fun goosing you into uncomfortable laughs and some good natured screams.

The gore… I’m not a very verbose movie watcher. Usually I’ll watch in silence, even with the better jump scares or grosser kills. But I was audible twice in this sucker… once when the movie goes to slow mo as a car drives and another time with some… brain juice. I’ve seen both scenarios in other movies, but this one gave me something new as far as splatter goes.

I’d say the first two acts are strong and we get to know some fairly fleshed out characters. When the horror starts, it’s a little less interesting but still solid (and squishy). I’d say the final act gets a little bogged down but the actual finale is stellar. So very satisfying and clever… and ultimately creepy in a way that makes me want a sequel.

This is a good fun little slasher film with a fun sense of humor and desire to make you squirm. I recommend it… as long as you don’t mind some splat while chuckling.
