Then Came You

Checked out the boringly titled romantic comedy Then Came You. This is a Netflix original that I gave a chance because it stars Maise Williams (Arya Stark on Game of Thrones) and Asa Butterfield (from a number of movies that I’ve liked… or at least wanted to like).

Asa Butterfield’s character is a hypochondriac who is so sure he has some form of cancer that he attends cancer support groups. There he meets Maise Williams’ character who does actually have cancer. They become friends and he helps her take items off her bucket list and she helps him with a cute flight attendant (played by Nina Dobrev). Will either women in his life discover he doesn’t have cancer and how will they react? Will Williams get better or die beautifully, imparting mounds of wisdom on those she lives behind?

This is a decent but entirely too long romantic comedy. It’s marginally funny and the actors are cute and fun together. Williams is very much playing against her Game of Thrones image while Asa Butterfield, well, he pretty much does what he does in a lot of his movies. Williams, unfortunately, is playing a bit of a Manic Pixie Dreamgirl so your tolerance for that trope will certainly sway your overall opinion of the movie.

So, this is a decent watch made better if you love romantic comedies and/or the prospect of another “teens with horrible diseases” movie. The flick’s heart is in the right place and the cast is watchable and occasionally lovely. I didn’t hate watching it but certainly, most certainly, think it could have been a bit shorter and a little a less predictable.
