Tom & Jerry (2021)

The new Tom & Jerry movie happens to occasionally star Tom & Jerry… which might be good given that they are characters who can fill five to seven minutes of screen time at most. Chloe Grace Moretz, Michael Pena, and other real life humans and their plot are the real stars of the movie… though certainly not why anyone decides to watch this flick.

Tom & Jerry are trying to get into a classy NYC hotel while Moretz cons her way into a fancy job for a big, rich hotel wedding. She puts Tom to work tracking down Jerry who is making himself at home and threatening the hotel’s rep. And the wedding.

Tom & Jerry as characters look good in their classic appearance (all the animals – including the bull dog and Tom & Jerrys angel and devil are in the same style). It doesn’t super meld well with the live action but it never could given their flat appearance. They pull off a lot of their old shtick – pratfalls, violence, and annoyance among frienemies.

And… heck… there’s not a lot to say. Sometimes the movie could elicit a chuckle. Mostly it didn’t. Neither in the live action comedy and the animated schtick. The story of the hotel and the wedding is occasionally charming but there’s not enough story or character to justify a ninety minute runtime, even when peppered in with goofy cartoon characters.

This isn’t the worst movie I’ve ever seen nor the worst live action/classic cartoon comeback movie. But it’s not very good and gets very tedious in the final act.
