Triple Frontier

Finally finished the new Netflix original movie Triple Frontier. This is a tough-guy action flick with an interesting cast. While not the best movie, easily one of their better Netflix originals. I mean, it’s no Cloverfield Paradox! :-p

So Triple Frontier stars Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Pedro Pascal, Charlie Hunnam, and Garett Hedlund as a group of generally down-on-their luck ex/para-military guys. For example, Affleck is doing a very bad job selling condos and doesn’t know what to do since he was trained to be a soldier and cannot handle civilian life. So the flick has a small post-war soldier theme. It’s not deep but it’s there and bolsters a bit what is otherwise a throw-back genre flick.

These guys are brought together because Oscar Isaac’s character (a man tired of fighting the drug war) has discovered a drug kingpin is storing millions of dollars in his safe house in South America (near the “Triple Frontier” border of Paraguay, Argentina, and Brazil). So he gets the team together to head down there and steal the money. The film is partially a heist flick but is more a post-heist escape story where everything that can go wrong trying to transport 50 duffel bags of cash does go wrong. It’s a ticking clock to see how many will make it out and with how much… and with what collateral damage to others.

I was pretty ok with this movie. It’s very well produced but I didn’t feel the action was as good as it could be. Which is a bummer since it did not look like an easy film to make. Some of the mountainous terrain looked pretty rough even if they are just making a movie. Assuming it was all on-location and it sure looked real.

So, yeah, if you like military/tough guy action flicks, heist movies, and escape thrillers, this is a pretty good time. If you have Netflix, it’s a worthwhile movie with a good cast, great cinematography, good suspense, and acceptable action.
