Women Talking

Women Talking was a disappointment to me. I was expecting a roaring, fiery, angry indictment. An indignant statement made, a fist in the air…
or barring that, a deeper philosophical or intellectual debate. Something more than we got.

The film is about an isolated colony where the women have been assaulted over the course of weeks. The men responsible have been caught, but the men in charge are still the ones who allowed this toxic culture to breed. So the ladies talk.. should they leave or should they stay?

I’m sad to say, this film left me cold and indifferent… it just seemed to be the same topic over and over again without going into deeper emotional or intellectual detail. Maybe I’m just not the target market… maybe I need to heed more the religious overtones instead of just roll my eyes as they came up. I’m not sure where the disconnect was since I could certainly, intellectually, see the importance of the topic.

But it was all largely academic and repetitive. I guess I should appreciate the lack of sturm and drang from the remaining men… though I found that to be a touch unrealistic. And I’d probably have rolled my eyes hard if there had been a hostage standoff and gun battle to punctuate the story.

I couldn’t get into the film but you might. Certainly smarter people than me seem to really have gotten something out of it. I did not.
