Wyrmwood: Apocalypse

Wyrmwood: Apocalypse is the sequel to 2014’s Wyrmood: Road of the Dead, an Australian zombie flick I only have the vaguest memories of. I remember it having a distinct look and feel with a touch of a Mad Max vibe to the zombie apocalypse. Didn’t care much for it and certainly didn’t expect a sequel. And here it is and, like the mindless undead, I gave it a rent.

Wyrmwood: Apocalypse is set during the zombie apocalypse and follows one survivor who spends his days finding creative uses for the apparent limitless energy of zombies. And capturing the living, the dead, and the hybrids and handing them over to a bunch of shady military scientists who are surely up to no good (to the surprise of our dumb hero).

This flick certainly has some energetic filmmaking, a prodigious use of practical effects, and a couple inventive uses for zombies… but it’s also pretty tedious. I just didn’t care about anything that was going on or like any of the characters. It doesn’t matter to me how cool or crazy your camera work is or even how bloody everyone gets if I just don’t care about what’s going on.

Not without some tiny merit, this is a really small scale sequel to a pretty mediocre movie. That said, if you liked the original, you’ll probably like this one. And if all you want is some campy zombie gore, it will deliver. But, for me, nah mate.
